The City of Calgary, at least temporarily, proclaims to be the "The Heart of the New West" and it is - certainly one of the fastest growing cities in Canada over the last decade. And while Calgary is the heart, there is little doubt the town of Cochrane is the soul, not just of the new west, but also of Alberta's western heritage. Cochrane is 35 kms west of downtown Calgary and easily accessible from the Trans-Canada Hwy or Crowchild Trail.
The town is nestled at the foot of the Big Hill along the banks of the Bow River, offering spectacular views of the rolling foothills as they grow into the Rocky Mountains, especially from vantage points on big hill. Evidence of Cochrane's long association with cowboys and ranching can be found throughout the town, including in the downtown district, which features a collection of quaint shops, boutiques, restaurants, the most famous ice cream in Alberta (Mckay's) and one of the most direct links to Cochrane's history, the Rockyview Hotel, built in 1904.
Over those 105 years, the hotel has been a dance hall, tea parlour, confectionary, bakery, steakhouse and saloon and now features 15 recently renovated rooms on the top two floors. Another link to the ranch rich history is the Cochrane Ranche Historic site, just north of the downtown. But, when you visit Cochrane, you won't find a town full of buckboards and cowboys wearing spurs. Without abandoning its past, Cochrane is carefully growing into a modern town, with many amenities and a list of the best builders and developers in Southern Alberta, which are developing communities that take full advantage of the terrain.
